In trigonometry and geometry, Triangulation is the process of determining the location of a point by measuring angles to it from known points at either end of a fixed baseline, rather than measuring distances to the point directly. The point can then be fixed as the third point of a triangle with one known side and two known angles.OK, so what do pyramids, triangles and triangulation have to do with business development and “Organic Search Optimization”? Strength, Relevancy and Duplication!
A Triangle is one of the basic shapes of geometry: a polygon with three corners or vertices and three sides or edges which are line segments. A triangle with vertices A, B, and C is denoted ABC. In Euclidean geometry any three non-collinear points determine a unique triangle and a unique plane (i.e. a two-dimensional Euclidean space).
A Pyramid is a building where the outer surfaces are triangular and converge at a point.
First we have to keep things simple… this is not a math class so it is not necessary to go into theory of math and geometry applications, just understand that the Triangle is a very powerful tool for computing and is rapidly becoming an extremely valuable asset when it comes to business and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) applications. The concept of Triangulation has recently become extremely important due to the dawning of a new era. We are becoming a society of networkers, and social networking is become the “In” thing which brings people together from all walks of life, backgrounds, ethnicity, and social standings. It is becoming a way for people across neighborhoods, cities, states and countries to be connected. Out with the old “Information Age”, and in with the new “Relationship Age” or what could be called the “Connected Revolution”.
Search Engine Optimization and Business Development is becoming more and more dependant on one’s ability to connect. Connect with customers, connect between businesses, connect between entrepreneurs… connectivity is endless. Ideas, products, information, introductions, all have been done through developed networks. And believe it or not, networking is not new… it has been around since the dawning of time. Traders between villages, townships, countries, even between continents used the art of networking. This was known as trading but nonetheless it was “The Art of Networking”. Because of the “Information Age”, networking became more efficient, effective and faster. Most importantly, networking has become popular as a result of the “Information Age” through “Social Networking Websites”.
As you know, Google has been pushing technology to the limit in almost anything web related, but they are certainly the leader in search engine optimization by which other search engine services look to. According to the University of California at Berkeley, “Google has one of the largest databases of Web pages, including many other types of web documents (blog posts, wiki pages, group discussion threads and document formats (e.g., PDFs, Word or Excel documents, PowerPoints). Despite the presence of all these formats, Google's popularity ranking often places worthwhile pages near the top of search results. Our web searching workshop reflects the fact that Google is currently the most used search engine.”

OK, so we have established some facts, now let’s put it all together… and that brings us right back to the term Triangulation. The figure shown is a representation of what I like to refer to as “The Art of Triangulation”, a simplistic way in which to show just how Search Engine Optimization or SEO can be organically developed. In order to get a business to #1 Ranking on the Internet, a business owner used to either spend a great deal of money, or a great deal of time optimizing their Website to gain relevancy of their site in order to reach that prime #1, page 1 real estate position. Relevancy equates to how relevant information on that site is when someone searches for a product, service or just plain information using certain “key” words or phrases in the search bar. Since Google is currently seen as the most widely used search engine, a new term has appeared such as “Google” something or even someone as in “Google me” or Google Bruce Swartz, and I will use the term “Google” for that purpose. Although Keywords and Meta tags are still important, they are not as important as they used to be; they are not the sole focus to reach that #1, Page 1 positioning.
There are many factors to reach #1, Page 1 positioning, but we will be focusing only on the most critical aspect which is relevancy. In order for a Website to be ranked higher in searches, there must be a high degree of relevancy of the site’s content to searches, and no longer is just the content of that website the only factor used in search engine’s algorithms. A Website needs to have relevancy with other Websites. For a period of time Websites could simply “Hyperlink” between other Website in order to be seen as having relevancy. Website administrators would contact administrators of other Websites having a common business interest either in content or some other logical business connection. Unfortunately it didn’t take long for the art of “swapping links” to become abused. SEO companies sprang up like flies, raising the cost of positioning. SEO companies began taking advantage of linking sites together having no logical relevancy between them making it more and more costly and difficult for legitimate companies to where small businesses were finding it harder to compete in their market or industry.
In the most simplistic of explanations, what Google did was redefine how these links can be made more relevant through “The Art of Triangulation”, the ability to establish and legitimize relevancy between resources, Websites, and industries having commonality and ties. Just like the connectivity found in the lines of a triangle and the natural strength found in pyramids, businesses are able to build strong associations among three or more connected points that strengthen Website legitimacy and relevancy, helping them to “organically” percolate up to that prime #1, Page 1 position. Will it guarantee you that #1 position? No, but it does level the playing field for those leveraging its application.
And this brings us to the term used earlier, the “Relationship Age”. I like keeping things as simple as possible so the best way for me to do that is by using a couple of easy to understand networking service types being used today.
There are Business Networking services as well as Social Networking services. Business’s industry and market will determine the network type but to be honest, any networking service will suffice so long as there are at least two which have a common relationship. Remember the Triangle and Pyramid explanation? Strength, Relevancy and Duplication are a direct derivative from the very nature of triangles and pyramids. If a business is not able to establish a common synergistic relationship with another business, social networking services are key resources in creating that relationship for needed relevancy. Information passed between the three resources in the “Art of Triangulation” figure must be relevant. In other words, not only must there be hyperlinks between them but content found in each of the three sites need to be relevant with each other.
Let’s use Larry, a small plumber in a large city with a tight budget. Larry has a service of course but he also carries a small inventory of parts along with sinks, faucets and other items. One of Larry’s business strategies is for his Website to gain better ranking on the Internet; he is looking for that #1, page 1 positioning when someone searches for a plumber. Below are paragraphs numbered 1, 2, & 3 representing three separate Websites and services.
1. Larry’s Website contains information about his company, frequently asked questions, tips and lists products he sells through his online shopping cart and ecommerce account. His Website also shares information between two other sites as described below. This is a very simple case in how the “Art of Triangulation” can be implemented, and just how Larry’s Website is able to gain significant relevancy among the two associated sites. As a result, Larry gains a far better chance in reaching top ranking on the Internet over his competitors who are spending thousands annually on SEO. Does it happen overnight? No, but it does happen in time along with consistent updates which do not need to be elaborate. Little stuff, simple stuff is all it takes, but these little things add up by leveraging the “Art of Triangulation” which has become the cornerstone of Business Development and Organic SEO. Every business owner should look into some form of a Social Networking service, and by all means should seriously look into controlling their personal information by getting in the Q by Getting QAlias. Along with a Website that includes technology for submitting Websites to search engines, business owners can now take back full control of their marketing strategy. Smart SEO companies can provide an invaluable service to business owners by leveraging this same technology, and by greatly reducing costs and passing savings on to business owners, the “Art of Triangulation” is a win-win situation for everyone.
2. Larry lives near a community that has its own Website or Portal such as PortalHood, similar to the service we have here in Brookhaven Fields (www.brookhavenfields.org), and the community’s Web Administrator asks Larry to provide information that is considered informational and educational to the community. Larry’s contribution gets placed onto the community’s site www.brookhavenfields.org which has links back to his own Website. Larry’s Website also contains information detailing how he helps the BFCA community with content that provides educational material which helps homeowners do simple tasks themselves, an invaluable community service. As a result, a two-way link of relevant information is being passing between the BFCA Social Networking site and Larry’s Website. There is also a link to a third Website as described in the next leg in this triangular network.
3. Through Bruce, Larry learns about another service by which Larry could leverage off of in order to get more in-depth and detailed information about him personally and his company. This service allows Larry to write a very in-depth Bio about himself along with links back to his plumbing company as well as details pertaining to the BFCA’s community Website. Larry is also able to create simple bulletins (blogs) allowing him to share with readers specific details such as activities associated with his church. In one of Larry’s bulletins he talks about Christmas in April, a program where his church, once every year, identifies a family whose home is in need of repair. Larry’s bulletin describes how the church pulled together a team of volunteers to make the repairs and lists all the companies, including his, that supplied equipment, material, along with links back to each participating company’s website as well as naming all the volunteers supplying the labor.
